    COBRA Alternatives That Cost Less

COBRA is a safety net, not a bargain. Here is what it really costs, who should keep it, and what most healthy people do instead.

    Why COBRA feels so expensive

While you were employed, your company paid the bulk of your premium and you only saw your share on the pay stub. COBRA bills you the entire premium plus up to 2 percent for administration. The plan did not get worse. You are just seeing the full price for the first time.

When COBRA is still the right call

    • You or a family member is in the middle of treatment, pregnancy, or a surgery schedule.
    • You have met most of your deductible this year and starting over would cost more.
    • You have a condition that private carriers would decline, and marketplace plans in your area are weak.

In those cases I will tell you to take COBRA. It is retroactive, so you can also wait inside the 60-day election window and decide later.

Alternative 1: Marketplace with a subsidy

Losing coverage opens a special enrollment period. If your income this year will be moderate, a marketplace plan with a premium tax credit can be a fraction of the COBRA bill. Subsidies are based on your projected household income for the calendar year, so a mid-year job change often qualifies people who would not have qualified in January.

Alternative 2: A private PPO plan

If you are in good health and your income is too high for a subsidy, a private, medically underwritten plan is usually where the savings are. You apply with health questions, choose a start date, and there is no enrollment window. Networks are often nationwide PPOs.

    Alternative 3: A short-term bridge

For a known gap, for example a 60 or 90 day waiting period at a new employer, a short-term or fixed-term medical plan can be the cheapest way to avoid being uninsured. These plans have real limits, so I only recommend them when the gap has an end date.

What I need to compare these for you

    1. The COBRA premium from your election notice.
    2. Your expected household income for this year.
    3. Any current medications or treatment.
    4. Your zip code and the doctors you want to keep.

With that I can show you all three alternatives next to COBRA in one call.

    Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to decide on COBRA?

You have 60 days from the date of the COBRA election notice. If you elect it, coverage is retroactive to the day your employer plan ended, so there is no gap.

Can I drop COBRA later and switch to a private plan?

Yes. COBRA can be cancelled any month. A private plan can start the first of any month after approval, so people often use COBRA for a month or two while an application is underwritten.

Does leaving COBRA early open a marketplace special enrollment?

No. Voluntarily dropping COBRA does not create a special enrollment period. Only exhausting COBRA, or the original loss of employer coverage, does. That is why the decision in the first 60 days matters.

    Are short-term plans ACA-compliant?

No. They do not cover pre-existing conditions and have benefit limits. They are a bridge for a defined gap, not a long-term plan.
