Health Insurance for Restaurant and Food Truck Owners

Restaurants run on thin margins and long hours, and the owner is usually the last person to get covered. Here is a straightforward way to think about your own coverage and your staff's.

    Cover yourself first

The business does not survive you being out for three months. Your own health plan and a short-term disability policy are the two pieces that keep the doors open if something happens to you.

    1. Marketplace plan. Priced on your household's net income. Restaurant owners often show modest net income after food, labor and rent, which can mean a real subsidy.
    2. Private PPO plan. Priced on health, not income, with year-round enrollment. If the business is profitable and you are healthy, this is usually cheaper and comes with a wider network.

Your staff: group plan or not

Once you have full-time W-2 employees, a small group plan becomes possible. It helps you keep cooks and managers in a business where turnover is brutal. The business can deduct its share of the premium. The trade-off is that group plans cost the business money every month regardless of how busy the season is, and the math only works if enough staff enroll. I run the group price against what individual plans would cost your key people, and we pick the structure that fits.

    Seasonal income

If you have a slow season, do not let the premium lapse. Reinstating a private plan can mean re-applying. Set up autopay from an account you fund in the busy months.

    Food trucks and mobile operators

If you operate in more than one county or follow events across state lines, a national PPO matters more than it does for a fixed location. Marketplace HMOs are often tied to your home county.

What I need to quote you

Zip code, ages of everyone to be covered, any medications, and a rough net income. If you want a staff quote, a census of ages and zip codes for the employees who would enroll.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I have to offer health insurance to restaurant staff?

Only if you have 50 or more full-time equivalent employees. Below that it is optional, though many owners offer it to keep key staff.

Can I deduct my own premium as an owner?

Generally yes. Sole proprietors and LLC owners take the self-employed health insurance deduction. S-corp owners run it through payroll. Your CPA confirms the mechanics.

    What about my part-time staff?

Group plans usually cover full-time employees only. Part-timers typically buy their own coverage, and many qualify for marketplace subsidies.

    Can I start a plan mid-year?

Private plans yes, any month. Group plans can usually start on the first of any month once the paperwork is in.
