Health Insurance for Landscapers, Lawn Care and Pool Service Pros
Lawn care, landscaping, pool service, pressure washing. Physical work, Florida heat, and no benefits department. If you run a route or a crew, here is how to get covered without overpaying.
The two risks you are actually carrying
The first is a medical bill. The second is an injury that keeps you off the route for six weeks while the bills keep coming. A health plan handles the first. Accident protection and short-term disability handle the second, and in the outdoor trades the second is more likely.
Health plan options
- Marketplace plan. Guaranteed acceptance, priced on net income. Good fit if your net after equipment, fuel and labor is modest, or if you have a condition private carriers would decline.
- Private PPO plan. Medically underwritten, year-round enrollment, nationwide network. The usual pick for a healthy owner with a profitable route.
Workers' comp is not health insurance
If you have a crew, workers' comp covers their on-the-job injuries. It does not cover you unless you include yourself, and it does not cover anyone's off-the-job health. Owners sometimes assume the comp policy has them covered and go years without a health plan.
Covering a crew
If you have a few W-2 employees, a small group plan can start with as few as two enrolled. In a business where good crew leaders get poached, coverage is a retention tool. I run the group number against individual plans for your people.
Seasonal cash flow
Florida work slows in winter for some trades and peaks for others. Put the premium on autopay from an account you fund in the busy months so a plan never lapses.
The deduction
Self-employed premiums are generally deductible up to net profit. Your CPA files it.
Frequently asked questions
I'm a sole owner-operator. Can I just get accident coverage and skip the health plan?
You can, but an accident plan does not pay for illness, surgery or a cancer diagnosis. Accident coverage is the add-on, not the substitute.
Does a private plan cover heat-related illness or injuries from work?
Health plans cover illness and injury regardless of where it happens. If you carry workers' comp on yourself, comp is primary for on-the-job injuries.
My income swings a lot. Which plan handles that better?
A private plan, because income does not affect the premium. Marketplace subsidies are reconciled at tax time, so a strong year can mean paying some back.
Can I add my family?
Yes. Spouse and children go on the same policy, and child rates are low.
