Moving to Florida: What Happens to Your Health Insurance

Most marketplace plans are tied to the state and county you live in. Move to Florida and the plan you had in Ohio or New York may stop working the day you arrive. Here is how to switch cleanly.

A move is a qualifying event

Moving to a new state opens a 60-day special enrollment period on the marketplace, as long as you had coverage before the move. Miss the 60 days and you wait for open enrollment. Private plans do not have windows, so they are the fallback if the clock runs out.

Your old plan probably does not travel

Marketplace plans are state-specific, and many are county-based HMOs. A private PPO with a national network often does travel, which is one reason people who move frequently prefer them. If you already have a private plan, call me before you cancel anything; it may simply need an address change.

    Florida specifics

Florida uses the federal marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Networks vary a lot by county: what is in-network in Tampa may not be in Orlando or Miami. With the enhanced subsidies expired after 2025, many new arrivals above the subsidy range find private plans cheaper than full-price marketplace coverage. We compare both for your new zip code.

    Timing the switch

    1. Find out the exact end date of your current plan.
    2. Pick the new plan to start the first of the month you arrive, or the day after the old one ends.
    3. Keep the old plan through the move. A gap, even a short one, is where people get hurt.

    Income changes with a move

If you moved for a new job, your income estimate for the marketplace changes too. Update it or you may owe subsidies back at tax time. On a private plan there is nothing to update.

    Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to enroll after moving to Florida?

60 days from the move for a marketplace special enrollment period, provided you had coverage before you moved. Private plans can be started any time.

Do I need a Florida address to apply?

Yes, for a marketplace plan. For a private plan you can often apply with the new address shortly before the move so coverage starts on arrival.

Will my doctors in my old state still be covered?

On a national PPO, usually yes for out-of-area care. On a Florida marketplace HMO, no, except emergencies.

I'm moving to Florida and retiring early. Which plan?

See the early retiree guide. Income from retirement accounts changes the subsidy math, and private plans are often the answer above the subsidy range.
