5 Mistakes People Make Picking Health Insurance

The avoidable errors we see most often — and how to make sure you don't fall into them.

Most health insurance regret comes down to the same handful of mistakes. Here are the ones we see most.

    1. Optimizing for monthly premium only

A $200/mo plan with a $7,000 deductible can cost you more in a year than a $400/mo plan with a $1,500 deductible — if you actually use care. Look at the total expected cost, not just the monthly number.

    2. Skipping the network check

It's easy to fall in love with a plan's price and forget to verify your doctor and your preferred hospital are in-network. Always check the carrier's online directory before enrolling — or better, call the doctor's office and confirm directly.

    3. Missing the deadline after a life event

When you lose employer coverage (job change, layoff), you have 60 days to enroll in an ACA plan under a Special Enrollment Period. Miss it and you may be locked out until November's Open Enrollment. Most people don't realize the clock is ticking.

    4. Not checking whether your prescriptions are covered

Two plans can look identical on paper and treat your prescriptions completely differently. Every carrier has a drug formulary (the list of medications they cover and at what tier), and if your medication isn't on it, you'll pay full retail. Before you enroll, look up each of your prescriptions on the carrier's formulary — or ask us to check for you. It takes five minutes and saves people thousands.

    5. Not reviewing coverage every year

Carriers change networks, premiums, and benefits annually. A plan that was perfect for you last year may have quietly cut your hospital from its network. Re-shop every year at renewal.

Bonus: assuming you can't qualify for private

We routinely place clients who'd been told they couldn't get private coverage. Underwriting isn't a binary — different carriers weigh different conditions differently. Always get a second opinion.

    How to avoid all five

Work with a licensed independent advisor (not a captive agent who only sells one carrier). The advisor's job is to compare across carriers, explain trade-offs honestly, and stay with you year over year. Costs you nothing extra — carriers pay the advisor a standard commission either way.
